The Mathematics of my Independence: Happy Independence Day!

August 15 is the day India gained her independence;
it’s also the day,  I lost mine.

It happened a decade ago. Since then, every year, my fairer half celebrates the day with double the fervor while my enthusiasm has clearly been halved. Along with the fact that India became independent from the British on this day, she celebrates the fact that this day has been instrumental in the doubling of her income; halving of her chores; and her finding an unpaid, on-the-call, 24×7 chauffeur!

And it all happened because ten years ago, on this day, we set eyes upon each other.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m as patriotic as they come. My dad was in Indian Army,  so my sister and I would snap our heels and yell Jai Hind when he came home from work, and we would leap out of the bed and stand to attention if we heard the National Anthem play in our dreams.

And yet for me, this day symbolizes a terrible loss of independence for my roving eye and my gypsy heart, a halving of my income, and a doubling of my duties, which have expanded to include chauffeuring, fan-cleaning, and opening bottle-caps that refuse to budge under her light touch.

This is why, for me August 15th is not just our Independence day, and why the Math of it works in her favor more than it works in mine.

Disclaimer: This post is a product of an overworked mind. Think about it. It’s Independence day today and I am chained to my desk, fighting a writer’s block that must be removed pronto or I could lose a commission.

And a Thank You Note to Cathy: Thanks for considering my blog for the award. The Liebster Award is not to be taken lightly. It requires a functioning mind at the helm of the blogging affair. Mine is right now on strike, intermittently producing what can be best categorized as gobbledegook.

Signing off…and wishing:

A HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO EVERYONE WHO LOVES INDIA!

    You stole the show away just with the very first quote. I understood what had to come but it was hilarious none-the-less.

    And I’m guessing from the thank you note, this is not exactly good news, but gotta do my duty anyway…

      Thanks for the nomination Ramida. The burgeoning workload doesn’t stop me from strutting like a peacock whenever the Liebster award is conferred upon me. Some good things are never too much 😀
